At first I thought the version below might be the finished one. But it just felt that the left side of the painted woodcarving and the right side did not work together.
This final finished version (below) did the trick, so I was able to stop reworking the piece over and over.
The stick figures across the way are raising their hands to celebrate nature, the sun, the water. Now it looks like the person in the checked shirt is looking across the way at the figures and they at him. This helped me to see the left and the right sides of the picture as one.
