This winter I decided to take some time to make some larger, more major pieces. Woman Lies Down with Dogs # 39 is one of the pieces that resulted. She was carved in the summer months of 2015, painted in the winter of 2016. This picture is the 39th in my guard dog series, each piece uniquely addressing the protective and devoted nature of dogs.
Here she is - carved in wood, protected by guard dogs, warmed by a fire, in the midst of a delicious sleep. Rarely am I so thoroughly satisfied with how one of my pictures turns out, but in this case I can only say "I can't do better than this!"

Bear with me as I show all the various paint stage incarnations of Woman Lies Down with Dogs, #39.
From calm beginnings...
To the addition of a dark anchoring base...
Reds and more reds, but it needs more action happening at the top...
Trees and dots, now it has better top and bottom balance...
Getting close but it needs some toning down and dialing back...
Stay tuned for next week's posting to see the completed piece.

Yesterday was the first day I was at my Ithaca Farmers' Market booth for the 2014 season. It was a glorious day- mild weather, good spirits, seeing friends.
While at the Farmers Market I worked on a new piece I am calling (for now) Dreaming Couple with Guard Dogs. Come by next week when I will be either finishing the caving of this one or starting to work on another, a small cow and farmer piece. Please remember that even though the Ithaca Farmers market is open on many days of the week, I only attend the SATURDAY Ithaca Farmers' Market, hours 9AM-3 PM.
Below is the sketch of Dreaming Couple with Guard Dogs, followed by a picture of the carving half complete.
Of course it got my 2014 Market season off to a good start in that I sold a small cat carving, click on the image below and it will enlarge. Happy travels to you Feed Me Now Cats #11!
Feed me Now Cats #11. $450.00. 9.5" x 14.5" x 1.5".

Woman Lies Down with Dogs #38 is DONE! and yes, I see I did tone down the reds in this final version. I tried to pull the woman and dogs to the foregrond by adding whites that draw your eye to that part of the picture first. I also added whites to the trees so they stand out.
I have various ways of knowing my work is done. One way is if I defocus my eyes -as I look at the piece it often appears to have movement. Another is if I feel calm when I look at the piece at the end or the beginning of a day in the studio. Another is to hold it upside down and look at in a mirror, I want the shapes and movement to look balanced. Another is if I shrink it down to a small size and I am still able to make sense of what the picture is about.
Perhaps other artists have ways of deciding when to stop painting on a piece, and if so I would be VERY interested to have your comments! As I say, I want to keep learning.

Woman Lies Down with Dogs #38 is too red and too dark.
In this version I've painted the frame red and increased the darks in the body of the piece. I'm looking at it as I write this blog and say to myself "that was a mistake, I used too many reds, I hope I ended up toning those reds down before finishing that piece! The picture is also too dark!"
Of course I should have been able to tell this piece is not done because I haven't added the final darks, such as the eyeballs and lines around the eyes of the dogs and the sleeping woman. This is one of the last painting details that I usually do. That and signing/dating the piece.
One benefit of the blog to me is looking at time lapse photos of the painting in progress. Looking at these photos and having to write about them has REALLY taught me a lot about how to improve as a painter.
For years I've said, I feel there's not much more I can learn as a carver, but painting is something I want to get better at. I've been working as an artist for forty years, and my goal is to keep improving to the very last piece.

I just can't stop until Woman Lies Down with Dogs, #38 looks just right. Here I've added some yellows on top of the earlier purple colors, added red to the center tree, texture to the ground and hills. I've made the dogs less white, more of a buff color I am beginning to wonder what color to paint the frame. You can see I've tried out a yellow ochre like color on the top right corner of the frame.

Layer after layer of paint on Woman Lies Down with Dogs #38 is beginning to pay off. The basic shapes of woman/dogs at the bottom and trees at the top, the colors - all are really working for me.

First coat of paint on Woman Lies Down with Dogs, #38 is a sort of tan/orange. Where it is shaded darker, I probably added a little bit of blue to the tan/orange mix.

Here Woman lies Down with Dogs, #38 rests on my workbench at the Ithaca Farmers Market. Carved in the summer of 2013, I painted her this winter. If you are in Ithaca, you can see this piece finished - at a show of my work at Found in Ithaca, running from March 5 to 30th.

This sketch of a piece I call Woman Lies Down with Dogs #38 holds promise to be a good one, one in a series of women with their guard dogs. There are the big shapes of the three trees, with the dogs and the woman forming another shape that anchors the trees to the ground.

Here she is with her dogs, sleeping, resting, safe in nature. Only one dog with open eyes stands on guard, the rest (even those by the fire) are flopped about tired from their day.

Gold leaf and brass stars really give Guard Dogs Number 30 crackle, snap and energy. This is a very special piece! These dogs are protecting with their pearly whites, leaving the people free to celebrate. Because the dogs are larger and bolder than the people, the guard dog energy is literally the center of the piece. My dogs are fierce and loving, growling and smiling. I'm glad they are on my side! Comments anyone?

Liking what I had seen in the earlier version of Guard Dogs Number 30, I continued to extend and deepen the colors. No fancy dance steps here, just continuing to practice what I already have down. The blues got deeper, the whites got whiter. The people now have a flesh tone that is the same color as the stars and the moon. Keep it simple.
Just writing about this piece, I feel the same excitement I had while painting it. It can be a heady feeling, seeing a picture come to life.

I never post on an art piece until I have it completely painted to my satisfaction. This painting process can go smoothly, or it can be filled with problems. The pressure of putting out a blog posting every three days while also painting it would create too much stress. Instead I do all the painting, taking pictures as I go, and only when a piece is done do I write about it on this Folk Art Mary Blog.
Due to the discipline of having to write my blog, I look at pictures of the work in process, learning from the photos as I write about each painting stage. As I said in the previous post, crafting this blog has helped me be a better painter.
When I pasted the photo of Guard Dogs Number 30 into this posting, I said to myself- "Yes, here is the beginning of a bold piece". The dogs are white and in the center, and they really grab your eye.

Guard Dogs Number 30 has its first coat of paint.
I find that painting the whole piece one color helps me to see the shapes and unifies everything. Now, instead of seeing 5 different shapes, the contours are simplified into one.
This is one way in which writing this blog has helped me to improve my work. In the past I would have painted the sky blue, the dogs white, the stars yellow, etc, right from the very start. But one time I probably painted the whole piece the same base color and, because of the blog which involves me taking pictures throughout the whole process, noted that it worked better. So now I do a base coat on all of my pieces, usually a warm color, because it glows through into the look of the finished work.

On to a new guard Dog piece, Guard Dogs Number 30! This is an unusual construction for me in that the picture has been made by layering five pieces of wood: the background which has the stars and the moon, a middle backgound piece with two stars, the two dogs in the center of the two stars, and a man and woman left and right made out of 1/4 inch birch plywood. It's always good to try something new.

Guard Dogs Number 27 kept calling for more paint until those dogs stood right out. I added gold leaf to the bottom frame, and brass tacks to give it some snap.
I like how the three big dogs balance out the small dog and moon facing them. I see this as a sort of visual joke, that the small one can stand off all of the three big ones. The big dogs bounce off the little one and then come back to rest at the center of the piece. Those pearly white teeth, that's another visual joke. The dogs are smiling and they are snarling. You can't tell which.

Guard Dogs Number 27 is pictured below with its first layers of paint. The first coat has to be scrubbed into all the open pores of the wood, and it takes far longer than you can imagine. I try to do just one first coat of a carving in a day, otherwise my hands would hurt. I like these colors, they feel warm and they make me just want to pat these dogs.

Today I have the entire day to be in my studio, a luxury I haven't had for a while. My plan is to do a lot of painting of half done artwork. I'm going to have to be careful to not allow interruptions or diversions from this plan.
I''m getting ready for two shows I will be doing in December, hoping people might want to buy my artwork as gifts, if not for others then at least for themselves. Sitting in a stack in my workspace lots of carved artwork waits to be painted.
Guard Dogs Number 27 is one of my icon pieces, designed to either stand on a shelf or hang on the wall. Below it is pictured at the very beginning of its life.
The sketch:

Woman sleeping, dogs, trees, stars, and moon. This painted woodcarving is DONE! I've got my answer, these are dogs and not wolves, although they have a bit of the wild in them - all the better to protect!

I've painted the border preparatory to putting on gold leaf. After many layers of paint this piece has a soft glow that tells me from my gut that it is almost done.

After painting the Woman Asleep carving a bit more, I realise I forgot to carve the area where I will be putting gold leaf. So here you see the piece almost done, except that I have carved a small border into the frame. Do you find it as disturbing as I do, that the dogs still have no eyes or teeth?

I keep working and working it until Woman Asleep with Guard Dogs looks better. The red in the dress and the white of the dogs really makes the lower part of the picture the first thing that you see.

Here is Woman Asleep with Guard Dogs #26, showing the picture after the first few layers of orange, yellow and green acrylic paint.

Woman Asleep with Guard Dogs #26 is now completely carved. This piece is reminding me of other dog pictures that I have carved and painted. In some of them my guard dogs look more wolf like and possibly threatening. In others the dogs look cuddly. I really don't feel like I'm in charge, what comes out of the wood is something beyond my command. These dog pictures come out of my gut, from emotions that are hard to put into words.

Here is a sketch for another carving with a "people in nature" theme. The woman is asleep, trusting, dreaming, floating in her own world. The dogs are guarding fiercely- or here's another idea, might these be wolves about to attack? They either have teethy grins or teethy snarls depending on whether they are dog or wolf. What do you think of these doggies, are they friend or foe?

Many layers of paint after the last version I showed you, Guard Dog and Guy in Nature #25 is DONE! This piece is a part of my people in nature series - people in relation to the natural world, the struggle between nature and people, the choice of conflict or coexisting with our natural environment.

Guard Dog and Guy in Nature #25 is a little further along. The dark outlines help the picture, but still it's mushy. At least now you can see the smaller details - the ax, the firewood and the tent.

I'm early in the painting of Guard Dog Guy in Nature #25, and the colors are still mushy. I like to keep moving fast through this (not looking good) stage of the piece to not get bogged down by doubts about how it will turn out.

This is a compact carving, only 9.5 inches wide, made entirely out of one board, frame included. It's in the guard dog series. I call it Guard Dog and Guy in Nature, #25. The late afternoon light outside my studio really sets off the carved wooden details in this one!

The Feed Us Now Dogs piece is DONE and gold leafed. It really worked best for me to paint the three dogs in the center so that they were mostly white. That way you look at them right away and you aren't distracted by the dogs in the outer frame. But enough talk, time to feed those dogs now - or else I'll be in trouble!

These dogs have teethy grins, like many of my guard dogs. Their coats have gone through a color change - one slightly orange, one slightly blue, one slightly yellow. This works better for me. You can still see that the dog on the right cuts through the frame, but it's not the first thing that catches your eye. You've got to leave some room for mystery.

This version is a little bit better. The dog to the right is still the same color as the inner frame, a kind of visual joke that I'm doing all I can to leave. The white dog to the left grabs your eye and leads you into the piece. The center dog and the dog on the right - they're out of balance with the dog on the left.

I've added dark outlining and color on the frame. But something still is not working. The colors are too pasty, and nothing grabs your eye as the first place to look.

Moving right along, this piece has got some real life. I'm still playing with the dogs being the same yellow color as the inner frame. I had very few directions from the person ordering this piece, other than that 1) the dogs should be different colors and 2) some of the dogs should have pointy ears, others floppy ears. As you see the floppy eared dogs are in the majority.

The dog piece sits on my easle after the first coat of tan paint. Behind it you can see the distracting jumble of my workbench. From here on out I'll crop pictures of this work in progress in order to eliminate background details.

Here's the Feed Us Now Dogs commissioned piece mostly carved. This wood carving was made in the winter of 2011. Like almost all of the pictures I show in this blog, by the time I write about it the piece is long ago finished. As you can imagine, it takes quite a bit of work to keep my pictures organized!

Here is the sketch of Feed Us Now Dogs drawn onto the wood, ready to start carving. This is a simple and bold picture, pleasing to my eye. I like how the four dogs, one at each corner, bracket the main scene, the three hungry dogs in the center of the piece.
